Voting YES on PROPOSITION 8

will define MARRIAGE in California to mean only a union between one man and one woman.

YES will add exactly 14 words to the California State Constitution:

"Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

This measure shall be known and may be cited as the “California Marriage Protection Act.”

Voting NO on PROPOSITION 8

will define MARRIAGE in California to mean a union between any two people regardless of gender, which would include same-sex couples.

No change to the California State Constitution will occur.

This is not a simple issue. The effects of this vote will be far-reaching and long-lasting. Please consider the many consequences before voting on Proposition 8.

Children in public schools will have to be taught that same-sex marriage is just as good as traditional marriage.

Right now, 96 percent of California public school districts must teach "respect for marriage and committed relationships" without showing any bias regarding sexual orientation.

Unless Proposition 8 passes, all of those school districts will be required to teach children in grades K-12 that same-sex marriage is equal in every way to traditional marriage.

Churches may have their tax exempt status challenged or revoked if they publicly oppose same-sex marriage or refuse to allow same-sex marriage ceremonies in their religious buildings open to the public.

Adoption agencies will be forced to place children with same-sex couples, regardless of an agency's beliefs.

Adoption agencies that oppose placing children with same-sex couples for religious or other reasons have already been forced to stop providing adoption services in Massachusetts and California.
